SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. —

Sacramento County is opening cooling shelters as the region braces for high temperatures.

"The heat can be dangerous if you're in it for a prolonged period of time without water, and so we really advise people if you need to be outside, then try to be outside in the cooler hours of the morning or the cooler hours of the evening," said Janna Haynes

Haynes works with the Sacramento County Homeless Services and Housing Department.

Starting Thursday at 1 p.m., the former youth detention center on Keifer Boulevard and Broadway Road will be open 24 hours a day with a capacity of up to 100 people.

The county says the center will have meals, showers, bathrooms, and cots. It will also have places to charge electronic devices along with kennels and pet food for anim
