TAMPA, Fla. — The Yankees ‘ new super utility player played a starring role during most of this roadtrip that produced nothing but wins and finally added another upswing to a season that looked like it was going down the drain.

Last weekend in St. Louis and this week in Tampa, Jose Caballero used his legs to pad his major-league stolen base lead and displayed his small-ball skills racking up base-hits with slap shots and a pretty bunt. He even showed that an average-size man every blue moon can mimic Aaron Judge with a two-homer night that doubled his season total. And, of course, he was running his mouth to get under opponents’ skin.
