GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The defense in the lawsuit over the 2019 death of a young man at the Calumet County Jail is presenting its case at the federal courthouse in Green Bay.
Eighteen-year-old Demetrius Stephenson died by suicide in the jail after being held there for three months on a car theft charge. He couldn’t post bail.
The lawsuit alleges Calumet County and three county social workers didn’t do enough to care for his mental health issues despite concerns expressed by Stephenson and jail staff.
The defendants deny the allegations.
One of the social workers on the case said she saw no signs of serious mental health issues and he wasn’t considered a suicide risk.
The case could go to the jury Friday.
