GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — A competency hearing for Bradford Gille is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Aug. 22 before District Court Judge Stepka.

Per an Aug. 21 news release, the proceeding will determine whether Gille is competent to stand trial. Under state law, competency means a defendant must be able to understand the nature of the court process and assist in their own defense in a rational way.

Possible outcomes include a finding that Gille is competent, though that is considered highly unlikely. If he is found incompetent, the case will be put on hold while the state forensic center has up to 15 months to provide treatment aimed at restoring competency.
