ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A union that represents CDC employees said around 600 employees have been fired.
The terminations come less than two weeks after a gunman targeted the CDC on Aug. 8.
AFGE Local 2883 said some cuts include employees from the Division of Violence Prevention, which is intended to help prevent shootings.
“These CDC staff that were let go are researchers, they’re statisticians, they’re practitioners with unique expertise in violence and injury prevention,” said Dr. Tom Simon, formerly with the Division of Violence Prevention Leadership.
The union said it was informed by CDC employees who started receiving notices on Monday and lost access to work email accounts over the weekend.
