MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — A relaxing day on the Salt River turned into a life-threatening emergency for 75-year-old Bill Davis. But thanks to perfect timing, it ended in a miracle .

On July 8, Davis went to the Salt River for the first time with his wife. But suddenly things took a turn for the worse. “I just thought it was going to be a relaxing day floating down,” Davis said.

Davis said at one point he and his wife got separated while floating. He tried to get out of the river at the Phon D Sutton Recreation Area when he began struggling in the water.

For several minutes, Davis was fighting against the current and began to drown. “My body had no strength to do anything. I just had to start floating,” he said.
