SANTA CLARA — The 49ers added another weapon to their offense in advance of the regular season.

Surprise! It wasn’t a wide receiver.

Brian Robinson Jr., a productive running back for the Washington Commanders, is headed to the 49ers in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick in 2026. The deal was reported Friday by multiple media outlets and confirmed independently by this news organization.

Robinson, 26, has been a consistent producer in Washington from 2022 through 2024, gaining 797, 733 and 799 yards in 41 games and 37 starts with 15 touchdowns. Robinson also caught 65 passes for 590 yards and five touchdowns over the three seasons. He was the leading rusher among Washington running backs all three seasons, surpassed only by quarterback Jayden Daniels (891 yards) in 2024.
