High winds and choppy seas from Hurricane Erin didn’t put a damper on Thursday’s annual Provincetown Carnival Parade , with dozens of marching delegations, motorized floats and drag performers strutting and strolling down Commercial Street in the week-long celebration’s signature event.
Provincetown Carnival — held this year from Saturday, Aug. 16 through Saturday, Aug. 23 — is the busiest week of the year for the small community situated at the tip of Cape Cod — well-known as a haven and hub for LGBTQ+ visitors.
The event is organized each year by the Provincetown Business Guild (PBG) and dates back almost a half-century to 1978, at a time when social acceptance of LGBTQ+ people was far narrower than today.
