CRITTENDEN COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — On August 20, 43-year-old Chiquita Roberts pleaded guilty to first-degree death by delivery after an incident that took place at the Crittenden County Detention Center on November 2, 2023.

According to reports, jail staff discovered 40-year-old Shalanda Hurd unresponsive in her cell and launched an investigation.

After reviewing video footage and speaking to witnesses, officials learned that Roberts, who was also in custody at the time, slid contraband under Hurd's cell door shortly before she was found.

An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be acute fentanyl and cocaine toxicity.

Roberts was initially charged with aggravated death by delivery on December 20, 2023, while still in custody. She was sentenced to 10 years, along with an additional 10
