MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An Arkansas woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after the 2023 death of an inmate at the Crittenden County Detention Center.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 43-year-old Chiquita Roberts pleaded guilty to first-degree death by delivery on Wednesday, August 20.

Roberts was charged in connection with the death of 40-year-old Shalanda Hurd. ASP says that Hurd was found dead in her cell at 6:15 p.m. on November 2, 2023. Hurd had reportedly been in custody since February 8, 2023, after she was charged with criminal trespassing.

ASP says that the Arkansas State Crime Lab determined that Hurd died after overdosing on fentanyl and cocaine.
