PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Evergreen Public Schools will delay the start of its 2025-26 school year until the first week of September, administrators announced Friday.

The decision comes as the district navigates union negotiations with the Evergreen Chapter of Public School Employees of Washington SEIU Local 1948 (PSE), which consists of support staff including paraeducators, bus drivers, security officers and maintenance.

The union voted to strike starting on what was intended to be the first day of school, Aug. 26. Classes are now slated to start on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

In support of the union, the Evergreen Education Association representing teachers agreed to show their support by not crossing the picket line.
