VANCOUVER, Wash. — Evergreen Public Schools announced Friday that it will delay the start of the 2025-26 school year by one week, pushing the first day of classes back to Tuesday, Sept. 2. The decision comes after the union representing the district's support staff voted Thursday to go on strike starting Aug. 26, which was the original start date for the school year.
The Evergreen chapter of SEIU Local 1948 covers about 1,400 classified employees across a range of jobs including paraeducators, bus drivers and service workers. It does not include district teachers, but the union said that the Evergreen Education Association — the teachers union — has pledged support and will not cross the picket line.
In a news release, the district said that its board of directors approved the delay Fr
