Evergreen Public Schools announced Friday it will postpone the start of the 2025-26 school year by one week as negotiations continue with its classified employees union.
Classes will now begin Sept. 2 instead of the originally planned Aug. 26 start date.
The delay comes after union members approved a potential strike that was set to begin on Aug. 26. The current contract for the classified union, which represents approximately 1,400 employees, including paraeducators, bus drivers, security officers and maintenance staff, expires Aug. 30.
“By delaying the start of school, we are giving bargaining teams an opportunity to reach a contract that is fair to both sides and sustainable under our current budget constraints,” said Superintendent Christine Moloney.
