MILWAUKIE, Ore. — Walk into Auntie’s Place in Milwaukie, and it feels unique.

Andulia Sanchez, who manages the family shelter, and Erika Silver, the director of housing and stabilization services for the Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA) , walked KGW through the space.

The differences are in the details — from the many murals to small cultural touches.

“Over here, we have a small medicine corner,” said Sanchez, as she pointed out the sage, juniper, cedar and other materials in baskets.

Auntie’s Place has been open for just over a year, and officials say they've served more than 30 families. Over 90% of them are still housed, and staff continue to support 100 people who've come through.
