FOREST ACRES, S.C. — A traffic lane at one of Forest Acres’ busiest intersections has reopened after a steel road plate unexpectedly shifted, causing vehicle damage and sparking safety concerns.

The incident happened at the intersection of Forest Drive and Trenholm Road, a heavily traveled corridor in that sees hundreds of drivers daily.

Columbia Water officials say the plate was part of ongoing utility work and was not expected to move. The steel plate had been placed over a trench as part of underground infrastructure work.

Clint Shealy, Assistant City Manager of Columbia Water, called the occurrence “incredibly unusual.”

“This was an incredibly unusual event that occurred, and we’re committed to doing the necessary things to make sure something like doesn’t happen again,” Shealy sai
