MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – East Cooper Meals on Wheels is celebrating more than four decades of delivering food and friendship across the Lowcountry.
The organization, which provides roughly 300 meals every day across Charleston County, honored its dedicated volunteers this week with a special luncheon. But leaders say the work itself is the biggest reward.
“It’s very gratifying. Giving back to the community is important because clients become family,” said longtime volunteer Scott Labarowski.
Founded in the early 1980s by Cheryl Steadman, Meals on Wheels has grown from 10 volunteers to more than 300. Steadman says there’s still a need that many people don’t realize.
“There’s a lot of hungry people, and it’s not just for the poor. If you’re sick and need help, we’re here,” she said.
