NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - There’s a new warning coming from health experts as a new COVID strain has surfaced in the area.

A runny nose, with congestion and a cough might feel like allergies but it could me something more.

“COVID is like a two-hump camel. It has two increases every year,” said Dr. William Schaffner, with Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The second surge is happening now. Dr. Schaffner says he’s seeing an uptick of people being treated as a new variant known at XFG or Stratus has emerged across the region.

“It’s part of this Omicron family that is highly contagious but somewhat less severe,” Dr. Schaffner said.
