Evacuees from the China Creek Campground and Marina have now returned after the Mount Underwood wildfire has moved to being held, and around the campsite there’s a sense of relief.

Fishermen were trying to make up for lost time at China Creek Campground and Marina on Friday. Returning with huge relief to the summer resort near Port Alberni that was evacuated by the massive Mount Underwood wildfire burning on its doorstep on Aug. 11.

“We’re really happy, we’re fortunate that the campground stayed in place and didn’t burn up,” said camper Terry Hall.

“Nice to see this place is still here… I was worried about the whole town. It was scary at times,” said fisherman Jamie Dodds.
