Hikers will soon find it easier and safer to get to the top of Knox Mountain, the much-visited downtown elevation named for a criminal-turned-philanthropic Scotsman.

And on-mountain work now being done is also intended to steer hikers away from unsanctioned trails to better preserve the area’s sensitive ecosystems.

“Knox Mountain is one of Kelowna’s most visited natural spaces. With increasing foot and bike traffic, unmanaged trails have led to erosion, vegetation loss, and wildlife disturbance,” says Todd Cashin, the city’s urban forestry supervisor.

“By curtailing use on steeper, unsustainable trails and reinforcing designated routes, we’re enhancing the ecosystem health of the park while maintaining safe and enjoyable access for users,” Cashin said.
