When I first heard of the news of the two proposed Riverview Farms dairies in North Dakota last summer — a 25,000 head dairy near Hillsboro and a 12,500 head dairy near Abercrombie — I had a hard time wrapping my head around the sheer size of their potential operations. North Dakota is home to around 15,000 dairy cattle, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2022 Census of Agriculture. But with the two new additions of Riverview's dairies, the state’s number would skyrocket to just over 50,000 head.
About a month ago, I was able to tour Campbell dairy and see the inside of one of these large operations. To say it was overwhelming by its size is an understatement, and yet the dairy I toured is still smaller than both the proposed dairies in Abercrombie and Hillsboro.
