GREENWOOD COUNTY, S.C. — A relatively small section of South Carolina was rumbled by several earthquakes over a 4-hour period early Saturday morning, according to U.S. seismic maps.
The U.S. Geological Survey lists seven earthquakes between magnitudes of 1.8 and 3 from midnight until around 3:40 a.m. in Greenwood County. All of the earthquakes were spread over a portion of the Saluda River along the northern portion of Lake Greenwood near the border with Laurens County.
The first two earthquakes, a magnitude 2.9 at 12:17 a.m. and a magnitude 3 at 12:23 a.m., were also the largest in the swarm. More than 200 people had reported feeling the larger of the two as of about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
