DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Now that the NCDOT has deemed Highway 12 in Dare County safe for travel, a phased lifting of evacuation orders for Hatteras Island is underway as of noon.
Residents, property owners, and workers are now allowed access to Highway 12 at the Basnight Bridge.
Visitors will have to wait until 5 a.m. Sunday before they can have access.
The highway closed back on August 20 due to ocean overwash from Hurricane Erin.
Highway 12 is still closed at the north end of Ocracoke Island between the South Dock Fetty Terminal and the National park Service Pony pens.
Crews are working on clearing deep sand and water off of that section of highway.
