The 2025-2026 school year began with empty seats in several Charleston County public schools serving large populations of English learners.

Ten days after the start of the academic year, Charleston County School District officials reported a spike in absences and low enrollment numbers in the multilingual student population, specifically in schools located in the North Charleston area.
