TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Today is national Homeless Awareness Day and Gilbert Park provided resources and free food for Terre Haute's homeless population.

The Loyal Veterans Battalion has helped put on this event for the past 6-7 years. It's a way to show support and give back to those who need it most. Some resources at the event were Firefly, a woman who has gone through recovery, dental, pathways, and more.

On this sunny day, music filled the air. People chatted with others and ate a fresh meal.

"It takes a community and also wanting to be aware of what's going on in the community. To open up your heart and to have some understanding and willing to help," said Matthew Harvey, a communication officer for the Loyal Veterans Battalion.
