COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A legendary Major League Baseball player from the Midlands was honored for his 90th birthday.

On Saturday, the city of Sumter held a screening of “Graceball: The Story of Bobby Richardson.”

Richardson starred for the New York Yankees in the ’50s and ’60s. He won three titles, but is known for being the only player to win a World Series MVP while playing for the losing side.

A five-time Gold Glove-winning second baseman and eight-time All-Star, Richardson also coached the University of South Carolina baseball program, leading the Gamecocks to their first College World Series in 1975.

The celebration was held at the Nettles Auditorium at USC Sumter, where Mayor David Merchant city of Sumter presented a letter of recognition to the Hall of Famer.
