VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — An update tonight in the case of William Shelton and Janet Aston.

The two were arrested at the beginning of August after an investigation that began earlier this year. Suffolk Police Department found six dead horses on their property.

Almost two dozen horses that survived the neglect were seized.

13News Now's Derek Lytle visited a Virginia Beach horse rescue that took in 18 of them, some of them those in the worst conditions.

Those who run the rescue tell 13News Now it's nothing short of a miracle that they survived and are recovering.

Alicia Mahar, with Circle a Home for Horses, said, in her more than two decades in rescue, she's helped more than 850 horses. But, she said, she's never seen a group more near death than this one, at that property in Suffolk.
