A PROMISING cyclist was tragically killed in a mass crash during a three-day race in Spain.

Ivan Melendez Luque, 17, was a last-minute inclusion in Spain's Ribera del Duero road race championship to substitute an injured teammate.

The crash occurred yesterday, midway through the second and toughest stage of the three-day race .

A large group of cyclists crashed into each other and went down at the same time.

Local reports said more than a dozen other cyclists fell on top of Ivan after he suffered a tyre blowout and came off his bike.

Emergency medical responders sent to the scene tried to revive him at the spot before he was rushed to hospital .

But the cyclist, who had his entire career ahead of him, could not be saved.
