ROCKHILL FURNACE, Pa. (WTAJ) — A Huntingdon County family was honored for their dedication and commitment to preserving a railyard.
The Kovalchick family has loved trains, dating back to Nick Kovalchick. After not receiving a toy train as a child, he decided to pursue his passion and make a significant purchase: the East Broad Top Railroad and Coal Company.
The company opened part of the property for the public in 1960 and has passed it down to his son, Joe Kovalchik. For decades, the two have maintained the property and made sure that people can still enjoy the locomotive, making it the oldest operating narrow-gauge railroad in the country.
"The railroad means everything to my father and also to me, because we both love trains," Kovalchick said.
