SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (PIX11) – A visitor from South Carolina died after being caught in a rip current over the weekend, police said.

Ishmoile Mohammed, 59, was swimming at Sailors Haven Saturday around 2:45 p.m. when he was caught in a rip current pulling him west, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

He was pulled from the water and airlifted to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Sailors Haven was closed until Saturday due to hazardous swimming conditions created by Hurricane Erin.

Most Long Island and New York City beaches reopened on Saturday for swimming, with some restrictions remaining for localized conditions, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced.
