Veteran actor and longtime theater director Jerry Adler, best known for his role as Hesh Rabkin in “The Sopranos,” has died at the age of 96, Parade reports.

Adler passed away on Saturday, leaving behind a body of work that spanned both Broadway and television, despite beginning his on-screen acting career in his 60s.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Adler initially worked behind the camera, contributing to more than 50 Broadway productions as a producer, director, and production stage manager, Parade said.

His transition to acting came later in life. Adler made his acting debut in an episode of “Brooklyn Bridge” in 1991, followed by an appearance as Mr. Wicker in the sitcom “Mad About You.” His career gained momentum after appearing in Woody Allen’s 1993 film “Manhattan Murder Mystery.”
