We are now two months into University of North Carolina at Asheville and Asheville City Soccer’s misadventures in Millennial Campus development planning (well, at least the publicly known part) and it’s worth assessing the parties’ claims about this project’s goals. UNCA says that converting one of Asheville’s last urban forests to a 5,000-person soccer stadium will increase student enrollment, generate much-needed revenue and provide economic benefits to Asheville. Asheville City Soccer says building this stadium will allow them to move from the amateurs to the pros, as qualification for Major League Soccer includes a stadium of 5,000 seats for home games.
So, will this project increase enrollment at UNCA? It seems laughable that the mere existence of a gigantic, heat-trapping stadium
