BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - It’s no secret that Hurricane Katrina brought devastation for many on the Coast when it made landfall in 2005. This is especially true for those who were in Pass Christian and Long Beach.
Former Long Beach mayor Billy Skellie and former Pass Christian mayor Chipper McDermott join Bill Snyder and Hugh Keeton to reflect on the storm’s impact and the recovery in its aftermath.
McDermott was serving as an alderman for the city when the storm struck, taking office shortly after.
“It took everybody about a year to really get going,” he described. “Took about 14 months to get the debris out. We were probably as close to an endangered species as you could get. I mean, we were close to extinction then.”
