At 7:35 p.m. on Sunday, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 8:15 p.m. for Chemung, Tioga and Tompkins counties.
Wind gusts of up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail (1 inch) are predicted.
"At 7:35 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located near Candor, or 11 miles northwest of Owego, moving east at 35 mph," says the weather service. "Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees."
Locations impacted by the warning include Danby, Caroline, Berkshire, Richford, Newark Valley, Candor, Spencer, Van Etten, South Danby and Brooktondale.
The weather service states, "For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building."
