Two children have been hospitalised following a serious incident at Aberavon Beach in Wales. A major rescue operation unfolded on Sunday evening after the youngsters encountered significant difficulties in the sea. The coastguard described the situation as a "mass casualty" rescue.

Emergency services were alerted around 8:30pm when reports came in about children in distress in the water. Coastguard teams quickly deployed a throw line to rescue three of the children, while others were saved directly from the water. The operation involved police, ambulance crews, and local volunteers, all working together to ensure the safety of the children.

Coastguard Rescue Officers provided immediate emergency care to the casualties before they were transferred to the ambulance service. Three ambulances were dispatched to the scene, with two of the children taken to hospital for treatment. The remaining four made their own way to the hospital.

A spokesperson from HM Coastguard stated, "HM Coastguard was tasked to co-ordinate the rescue of children in the water at Aberavon Beach yesterday, 24 August, at around 8:30pm. Port Talbot RNLI Lifeboat, Port Talbot and Porthcawl Coastguard Rescue Teams, Welsh Ambulance Service and South Wales Police were on scene. Port Talbot Coastguard Rescue Team rescued the children from the water and provided first aid until the Ambulance arrived."

Welsh Ambulance confirmed they received the call at approximately 8:33pm regarding the incident. They sent three emergency ambulances and one operations manager to assist. The ambulance service reported that two patients were conveyed to hospital, while four others made their own way there.

This incident marks the third water rescue for the coastguard team this season, bringing the total number of lives saved to nine. In light of recent events, a warning has been issued to beachgoers visiting popular Welsh seaside resorts. Huge waves have been reported, knocking people over and causing injuries at Rest Bay in Porthcawl. Volunteer lifeguards are urging visitors to "take extreme caution" in the coming days due to the expected strong currents and hazardous conditions.
