A contentious ordinance is expected to head to Tempe voters in March after community organizations garnered more than 4,500 referendum signatures in July, according to a news release from the Phoenix Metro Democratic Socialists of America.

The effort was launched hours after the Tempe City Council voted to update its special events ordinance, drawing vocal criticism and protest from residents who said the updates would chill protests and shut down charitable groups.
