SPRINGVILLE – A Utah Highway Patrol sergeant successfully stopped a wrong-way driver in Utah County on Sunday afternoon.
The incident happened just after 3 p.m. near milepost 260 in Springville. UHP said an elderly man driving a white SUV was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.
Clayton Shumway shared a video with KSL TV of that driver as he came within inches of hitting him in the HOV lane. Shumway said he was able to swerve out of the way at the last second.
UHP said a sergeant eventually found the wrong-way vehicle and stopped it by “strategically colliding with it, disabling the vehicle.”
Both the trooper and the driver of the wrong-way vehicle received minor injuries. The names of those involved were not immediately released.
