When Raychal Collins-Struck applied for lead paint testing for her Monroeville home back in December, she was already prepared for the process — her day job has her connecting families to Hello Baby, a county program connecting those with newborns to various services.
She was pregnant and has a two-and-a-half-year old child, so she wanted to make sure her home was safe. Then the tests, taken in February were positive, both in the walls of the staircases leading to the basement and second floor of her home, which was built in 1900.
Ms. Collins-Struck, 41, panicked. Her young son, who was about to visit in the coming weeks, loves playing with toys on the stairs, and she didn’t want to risk exponing him to the toxic substance, which can have severe effects on a child’s development, she said
