NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Two people were shot, one fatally, on a residential street just blocks from the heart of the Elm City's downtown business district.

Police confirmed one of the victims, a 26-year-old man, has died from his injuries. Another victim, an adult male, is in critical condition.

Police say they believe the victims were targeted.

The shooting happened around 2:10 pm, on a sunny summer afternoon. Dickerman Street, a short residential road one block off Whalley Avenue, was closed while police canvassed the neighborhood and collected evidence. Shortly after 6 pm, police said they were preparing to reopen the street.

There is no word on possible suspects at this point.
