WDSU's Elizabeth Kuebel, a Northshore native, was in the sixth grade and 11 years old when Katrina hit, so she has memories of the storm, but she got her parents to help fill in what they remember, too. Advertisement

The Kuebels stayed in a Northshore hospital during Katrina because Kuebel's dad needed to be close to the patients he cared for.

That hospital is where they watched the strength of the storm busting out car windows in the parking lot and snapping nearby pine trees like matchsticks.

But fortunately, their Mandeville home was untouched.

Kuebel remembers her mom learning how to text for the first time during the aftermath to keep in touch with family members.
