CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) - A Carbondale, Illinois, man is in custody facing assault charges.

According to the Carbondale Police Department, officers were called to the 100 block of W. Main Street on August 24 just before 3 p.m. for a report of a vehicle swerving at people protesting in the area.

When officers arrived, they learned the suspect drove to the area a second time and allegedly pepper-sprayed a victim.

Officers later identified the suspect as 78-year-old Douglas Wells. He was found at his home and arrested.

Wells was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery, and is currently being held in the Jackson County Jail.
