An Air China Boeing 777-39L(ER) carrying over 300 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing in Nizhnevartovsk, Siberia, after experiencing an "engine failure". The aircraft had departed from London Heathrow and encountered technical difficulties while flying over Russian airspace.
The pilot opted for the remote Russian city due to favourable weather conditions, which allowed for a safe landing despite the aircraft operating on only one engine. Eyewitnesses reported that airport staff were surprised by the unexpected arrival of the British plane, with one stating, "Airport services were in awe of the unexpected guest: it’s not every year that such a plane from Great Britain arrives in Nizhnevartovsk."
Footage has surfaced showing the large jet touching down in the rarely-visited city. The flight had taken off at 10:43 PM the previous night, and the diversion occurred shortly thereafter. As of now, it remains unclear whether any British citizens were on board the flight.
