Tributes have poured in for a couple who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on the Isle of Wight during the Bank Holiday weekend. Justyna Czoska and Wojtek Kowalkowski are believed to have died when their private helicopter, reportedly being used for a lesson, crashed in a field near Ventnor. The incident occurred on Monday morning, with emergency services alerted at 9.24am.
The helicopter was carrying four people, including the pilot, when it went down. Sadly, three individuals died at the scene, while a fourth was taken to hospital in serious condition and remained there overnight. A GoFundMe page has been established by Justyna’s daughter, Julia, to assist with repatriation and funeral costs. The page states, "This sudden and devastating event has left all us heartbroken and struggling to cope with the loss. We are now trying to bring them both back to Poland so they can be laid to rest with their families, in the place they called home."
The tribute continues, "The cost of repatriation, funeral arrangements, and travel is more than we can manage alone, and we are asking for support during this incredibly difficult time. Any donation, no matter how small, will help us give them the farewell they deserve. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your kindness, support, and for keeping our family in your thoughts."
Local authorities are investigating the crash, which has shocked residents of the typically quiet Isle of Wight. The first reports of the incident came in shortly after 9.30am. Flight tracking data indicates that the helicopter took off from Sandown Airport and climbed to approximately 800 feet before encountering difficulties. It is believed that the helicopter was airborne for about 27 seconds before it crashed.
Witnesses reported seeing a helicopter flying low over Newport around the time of the incident. Graham Watkins noted, "One came over Newport, blackish, around that time line. Sounded more like an aeroplane doing acrobatics, engine surging, but was in level flight." Another local, June Warren, remarked on the low altitude of helicopters in the area, while Jacqueline Sollis expressed her gratitude for the emergency services, stating, "What a terrible thing to happen, thank goodness for our wonderful emergency services. My thoughts to all involved in this incident."
Isle of Wight West MP Richard Quigley expressed his shock at the news, offering his condolences to the families affected. He stated, "My thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the families and friends of those involved. And my thanks to each and every one of the island’s emergency services who attended the incident."
Local police and crime commissioner Donna Jones also extended her condolences, saying, "This is a devastating incident that has deeply shocked the local community. The families affected are being supported during this incredibly difficult time."
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched an investigation into the crash. A team of inspectors has been dispatched to the site to gather evidence and conduct inquiries.
