In a shocking incident in Porepunkah, Victoria, two police officers were allegedly shot dead in an execution-style attack. The suspect, identified as 56-year-old Dezi Freeman, reportedly fled into nearby bushland with his wife and two children after the shooting.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush confirmed that the officers were shot while attempting to execute a warrant related to historic sex abuse allegations at Freeman's property. The tragic event unfolded shortly after 10.30am on Tuesday, 26 August, when ten officers arrived at the scene.
Commissioner Bush described the attack as a cold-blooded murder, stating that a 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable were killed. A third officer sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital.
In a statement, Victoria Police reported that the exact circumstances of the incident are still under investigation. They urged residents in and around Porepunkah to remain indoors and avoid the area as a significant search for Freeman is underway.
Alpine Shire Council Mayor Sarah Nicolas expressed her condolences, stating, "Today has been a day of deep sorrow and shock for our community... We are grieving together."
Freeman has been described by Australian media as a 'sovereign citizen', a term used for individuals who believe they are not subject to government laws or authority.
The police have confirmed that detectives from the Homicide Squad, Armed Crime Squad, and Fugitive Squad are involved in the ongoing investigation. They have also requested that anyone with information contact Crime Stoppers.
