Natural burials and limiting the number of interments of cremated remains in a grave are being considered in proposed amendments to City of Sault Ste. Marie’s cemetery bylaw.

Up to six cremated remains can be put in a single grave now. That may be reduced to four, a release says. The current capacity would continue for graves currently owned. Two full-body burials, where possible, in a single grave would also continue.

Embalming would be prohibited in natural burials. Burial containers would be made from sustainable, fully biodegradable materials. Wildflowers and grasses would be featured.

Residents can learn more at open houses on Sept. 10 from noon to 2 p.m. at Ronald A.Irwin Civic Centre’s Russ Ramsay Room and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the cemetery chapel at 27 Fourth Line E.
