LANSING — Michigan saw a slight increase in overall traffic crashes and fatalities in 2024, but vulnerable roadway users experienced significant rises in crashes and deaths, according to data released by the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center.
Per an Aug. 26 news release from the center, the total number of crashes in 2024 was 288,880, up 927 from the previous year. Roadway fatalities also rose, with 1,099 deaths compared to 1,095 in 2023.
Bicyclist-involved crashes rose 20% to 1,773, with fatalities increasing 21% to 29. Motorcycle crashes climbed 4 % to 3,187, with 168 fatalities, a 2 % increase.
School bus crashes were up 6% at 1,044, while pedestrian crashes rose 1% at 2,131. Work-zone fatalities also saw a sharp increase of 17%, with 28 recorded in 2024.
