A prison sentence was handed down to a Flint woman on Monday who killed her toddler in Pontiac last year.
At a hearing in Oakland County Circuit Court, Judge Daniel O’Brien sentenced Latonya Thomas to 15-60 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections for the second-degree homicide and first-degree child abuse in connection with the April 25, 2024 death of her 3-year-old son, Zaveion Thomas.
In sentencing Thomas, the judge offered words of compassion and encouragement, stating in part: “You did not fail as a mother…yet — because you’re still breathing…You didn’t fail because you still have life ahead of you…My two cents’ worth is you’re only a failure at the end if you continue down a bad path which I don’t see it, but I see just the opposite.”
