H igley Unified School District officials on Aug. 26 said neither students nor staff violated any campaign laws when election flyers were handed out at a Higley High School’s curriculum night

State law prohibits campaigning and electioneering by students.

Although Governing Board member Anna Van Hoek at a recent board meeting said she had been told a student said their teacher gave them the flyers and instructed them to tell all parents, “This must pass,” district spokeswoman Jessica Bautista said the flyers had been cleared by the district's legal counsel and that students were not given any directives.

The district said the students were volunteers on campus, helping to direct parents to classrooms.
