BANGOR, Maine — Officials have identified the pilot killed Friday when a small plane crashed while attempting to land at Bangor International Airport.

Luigi Accusani, 74, of Italy was the only person aboard the private aircraft, which went down around 1:20 p.m. in a grassy area just outside the airport’s perimeter fencing, Bangor police said.

Accusani had departed Goose Bay, Newfoundland, and was scheduled to land at Bangor International Airport (BGR) when the crash occurred. First responders found him dead among the wreckage.

The airport runway was temporarily closed Friday afternoon as crews responded. Bangor police and fire officials were assisted by the Air National Guard Fire Department, airport emergency teams and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
