CHICAGO (WGN) - Mayor Brandon Johnson is set to fill an empty seat on Chicago's school board ahead of Thursday's budget vote.

A report from the Chicago Sun Times said Johnson will appoint Ángel Vélez as the school board's newest member.

Vélez, a diversity, equity and inclusion consultant, has a doctorate in education policy, organization and leadership from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and will be sworn in at Thursday's board meeting, during which board members will vote whether or not to pass the proposed budget plan.

Vélez will be representing District 9A on the city's South Side and will be filling a seat that has been vacant since June.
