CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cuyahoga County Sheriff Harold Pretel said Tuesday that his office is reviewing the chase that ended in a fatal crash of an innocent bystander, the second in five months.

He said the review comes as investigators are examining criminal charges against the driver who fled deputies.

Pretel, in a statement, placed the blame on the car’s driver who failed to stop for deputies of the Downtown Safety Patrol.

“The actions of the suspect in this incident resulted in a tragic loss of life,” he said. “As per policy, an administrative review of the incident is underway concurrent with the criminal investigation.”

Pretel also stressed that the department’s policies “are continually reviewed and revised to ensure the most up to date practices are followed.” He added that deputies
